Frontale – Film Festival

“They come to stalk me. They want me to be on my best behavior.
Only to capture the crap I deliver on celluloid for an infinite lifetime.”

– Michael Kunc, for the FRONTALE 2011

The FRONTALE 2011 is a Film Festival in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.
When: 1. – 3. Dec. 2011

Where: BORG Wiener Neustadt

Within three days a variety of films will be shown and workshops and “Couch Talks/Discussions” will be held, all dealing with topics such as “youth” in films, media, job opportunities in the film business and society. At the heart of the festival are feature films, an international short film contest, a mobile phone film contest, discussions and informative events with renowned film experts.

Why?
Young people move within a vast media landscape.
Movies, TV, the internet, mobile phones, etc. are part of their daily lives. The unthoughtful actions often resulting from these interests offer enough substance to challenge the established media system. The FRONTALE 2011 tries to highlight and to show dangers and responsibilities towards media consumption, but also tries to point out job opportunities in the media industry.

Who should be interested in the FRONTALE 2011?
The target audiences are primarily young people, school classes and movie lovers.
The focus is on films and movies by and about young people, centered around youth culture from around the world.

When and where?
The FRONTALE 2011, scheduled to happen from the 1st to the 3rd of December 2011, will take place at the BORG in the heart of Wiener Neustadt. On all festival days, every morning before the FRONTALE 2011 opens its door for public screenings, workshops for middle school classes will be held at the main venue, in order for pupils to take a closer look behind the scenes of film-making. The result of the workshop will be a short film to be presented at the FRONTALE 2011 in the short film program. In addition, several schools will choose a film from a wide selection for their classes and will be invited to discuss it after the screening. Furthermore, the FRONTALE 2011 has been invited to visit the FH Campus in Wiener Neustadt to show a special selected film for the students.

Feature films, short films and mobile phone films:
The film highlights that will be shown on the big screen will attract students and cineasts but also be a premiere for many young people, and a rare opportunity for film enthusiasts to see their beloved “cult-movies” in an appropriate setting; by mixing mainstream and art-house films, the festival gains a diversity that has been lost due to the death of the smaller private cinemas in most cities around.

With the addition of short films and mobile phone films to the festival, the FRONTALE 2011 is looking at an exciting premise; young people and film-makers get the opportunity to show their self-produced short films on a given topic ("Fast & Curious") and discuss them with the audience and various experts.

The possibility to take photos and make videos with mobile phones influenced the film and media business in recent years. The FRONTALE 2011 offers the opportunity to use these new technical features to make and submit a short mobile phone film on a given topic.

Couch Talks:
The FRONTALE 2011 wants to throw light; on the screen and on topical issues. In discussions with film-makers, media researchers and "celebrities", today's media landscape will be questioned and inspected in regard to risks, responsibilities, career opportunities, etc …

Workshops:
Prior to the main screenings, various workshops are going to happen.
Selected schools from Wiener Neustadt and the LOTTA Girls Base (Association for Youth-Culture Wiener Neustadt) have been invited to use the opportunity to produce short films, instructed by Christoph Wanna, an experienced film-maker. Step by step, the craft of film-making will be learned. The final films will be presented before an audience at the FRONTALE 2011; in discussions with the audience, the “producers” will be talking about the process of creating those films and have to “defend” their creative products against criticism.

The FRONTALE 2011 offers a variety of ways to experience film and its business, through information, discussion, education, self-experiment, consumption and entertainment.
